My brain was in full gear at 5:30 this morning to write this and it knew exactly what it wanted to write.
Notes:
Everyone has their own opinion of Lee and Rosemary's infertility plot, but I think most fans of the show like that it was given to them. In fact, I’ve seen many older female fans talking on Instagram in particular about how much this plot means to them on a personal level, due to their own struggles with infertility.
Due to the show being family-friendly, they can’t go into all the details about infertility that make it so hard, but there is only option for conception for characters living in the 1910s: try, try again.
Here’s a quote that sums that up:
“I’d known friends who went through this, the grim tracking of the ovulation cycle, the way making love becomes insemination, as romantic as a turkey baster. One of my college friends, in fact, had said she preferred the turkey baster. “I don’t have to pretend that way[.]”
― Kristan Higgins, On Second Thought
In my opinion the series did kind of hint at this issue, but I wanted to explore it a little more, as well as the fact that even though the characters discussed the issue with one another in an episode (a discussion I was very satisfied with, actually) the feelings didn’t just magically disappear. Rosemary still wants a child; Lee still wants to support her and protect her from feeling that immense personal guilt over a pregnancy not taking because they don’t know why it’s not happening.
There’s so much more I could write about on this topic, but for the sake of this story—just a blip in their lives, a little moment where they understand one another—I wanted to keep it simple. This story is almost just...a reassurance.
I’ve always imagined that Lee and Rosemary’s private/personal life was a bit on the silly/dramatic/romantic side, so hopefully it feels within character. :)
As to the future of the characters, everyone has their own wish. Some fans hope they are able to get pregnant while others are rooting for them to adopt a child. I think everyone’s opinion here is valid; sometimes it’s nice to turn to fiction for the miracles we can’t hope to experience ourselves, and other times it’s nice to see characters who are in an unhappy situation find a happy ending that suits them.
Imagine what you will for them, and I hope whatever S8 brings next year, you’ll find it satisfactory. ♥
