Notes:

This rewrite wasn't too extensive. I did strip out the section titles (they were just snippets from the lyrics and added nothing to the story imo) and rewrote everything so that it sounded better, but because the original structure was so decent it was not too difficult a rewrite—in fact, I rewrote it at work.

This story did well when I wrote it and I wanted to improve on the things people seemed to like about it back then, particularly the first and last scenes. I was also weirdly hard on myself in my original author notes? Not sure what I was worried about, even the original story held up better than I expected it would.

The word count barely changed somehow; that's just a funny detail for me.

The original title was "Just Look Around" because it was vibing along with Westlife's Swear It Again and that's great and all, but the rest of that lyric line is meh and didn't encompass the more optimistic ending of the story so I changed it to a slight rearrangement of another line ("the only joy I have ever known"). I don't love it but it would feel weird to completely strip away the song that did make me want to write this in the first place.

I can't believe I don't have more notes for you. This was actually a pleasant rewrite since it was more rearranging of words and sentences than an entire concept or story, haha.
